City of Corfu

The town of Corfu (Kerkyra) is situated in the center of the eastern part of the island and it is considered one of the most beautiful towns of Greece. It is divided into the old and newer town and it constitutes the administrative and commercial centre of the island.

The old town, “within the walls”, preserves, to a large degree, intact its Venetian architecture, while the new town, which is developing in the perimeter of the old part, has all the features of a modern and contemporary town, with port and airport.

In Corfu, you must try the traditional Corfiot cuisine; “pastitsada”, “sofrito”, “burdeto”, as well as the traditional sweet madolata and kumquat (liqueur or sweet).

Here, you will meet most of the island’s sights; first of all the old town, listed in the World Heritage monuments of Unesco, with its typical narrow streets (“kantounia”), the famous Spianada square, the largest square in Greece, the Liston arcade, Kampielo, the oldest district of the island, the palace of Saint Michael and George and the impressive Old Fortress. You should definitely visit Kanoni, the most photographed location of the island, 4km to the south of the town, in a beautiful and privileged location, wooded, with dream beaches and the most beautiful view of the island, as it looks out to Panaghia (Virgin Mary) Vlaherna and the famous Pontikonissi. Moreover, you can visit the Archeological museum (1962-1965) with the sculptures of the temple of Artemis, the museum of Asian Art (1927), the museum of Antivouniotissa, in the church of Panaghia Antivouniotissa, one of the oldest in town (15th century), with a collection of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine icons and heirlooms and Mon repos, property of 258 thousand square meters (!), on the hill of Analipsi, in the place of the ancient town of Corfu, 3 km from its historical centre. Here you will find the magnificent palace (1824), initially, summer residence of commissaries during British occupation, and, after the unification of the Ionian islands to Greece, summer residence of the royal family of George A’. Today it operates as museum.
