Argostoli

Argostoli (9,037 inhabitants) is situated in the north of Kefalonia and is the capital of the island since 1757. Built amphitheatrically, in the bay of the lagoon of Koutavos, it is the biggest city of the island with trade activity and it constitutes the destination of the most tourists visiting Kefalonia. It has an organized port, one of the safest ports in the world, big streets, many pedestrian streets and an amazing coastal avenue (Antonis Tritsis Ave.). Its architecture has strong Ionian elements with red roofs and wide balconies, yet the buildings are contemporary, since during the earthquakes in 1953, Argostoli was partially ruined. Most of the manors, the impressive buildings, the churches and their bell towers were ruined by the powerful earthquake shakes. Argostoli was gradually rebuilt. If you want to drink a coffee, you can go to the central square, Lithostroto (means paved way) and Siteboron Str., the commercial and social center of the city with many stores, cafés and bars. You can also walk in Antonis Tritsis Coastal Avenue, paved with pebbles that create marvelous designs and planted with palm trees or in Kabana Square, where Kefalonians burnt the Libro d’ Oro, namely the bible where all nobles of the island were recorded since 1797, after the arrival of the Frenchmen in the island. In the square there is the church of Aghios Spyridon, with the famous clock and the golden iconostasis. You should visit, too, the archaeological museum, with noteworthy findings from excavations that have taken place in the island, the Korgialenios Library, sheltered in one of the historical traditional buildings of the city with a rare collection of old editions and manuscripts, as well as “Katavothres” (swallow holes), a rare geologic phenomenon considered to be one of the “mysteries” of Argostoli; at the end of the peninsula of Argostoli, the sea penetrates the shore and flows into swallow holes, namely underground pipes, under the sea’s surface.
