Assos

Assos is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages of Kefalonia. It is built around the peninsula of Assos, maintaining the authentic traditional Ionian architecture. The peninsula with steep slopes is linked with the main island by a narrow strip of land and is surrounded by green areas with pine and cypress trees, beside the blue waters of the Ionian sea.

Here, you can take a walk in the neighbourhoods of Assos and visit the Venetian fortress, built in the late 15th century to protect inhabitants from pirate raids. Along with the castle of Aghios Georgios, they were the two most important forts of Kefalonia and made Assos capital of the north side of the island. Today, are saved remains of the walls of the castle, some buildings such as barracks and the chapel of Aghios Markos. From this point, you can admire the magnificent view of the Ionian.

Near the Assos peninsula, you will find many small, hidden and beautiful beaches, such as the beach of Assos with its clear, shallow waters. But in any case, it is worth visiting the beach of Myrtos, with its characteristic white sandy beach. It has been characterized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe: towering cliffs, which protect the beach from the winds and crystal blue waters. The beach is a “landmark” of Kefalonia.

It is the most photographed beach in the island, even in the whole Greece. One of the most impressive beaches in Mediterranean. Mirtos beach is among the ten prettier beaches in the world. A beach with white sand and small pebbles in some spots and a wonderful blue sea which deepens abruptly. There is a lifeguard but when there are strong winds swimming is forbidden. It is at the northwest of the island.
