Sami

Sami is situated in the west of Kefalonia and is one of the biggest commercial centres of the island and an important tourist resort with adequate infrastructure. Its port is considered to be one of the most important ports of Kefalonia since it connects the island with Patras and Italy. It is one of the most ancient cities of Kefalonia, a quite picturesque city, fully green, with many caves (there are about 17 caves here, but only two of them are accessible).

Sami became famous all over the world in the past years due to the Hollywood movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” (2000).

Here, you can visit the cave of Melissani, the most beautiful and undoubtedly the most famous cave of the island, a cave-lake in the location Karavomylos. A part of its top has collapsed resulting in the creation of unique natural scenery with the sun’s beams penetrating in the interior of the cave while it is reflected in the waters. You may visit the cave’s interior only by boat. You can also visit the cave Drogkaratis, one of the biggest and most beautiful natural sights of Kefalonia, very close to the sea cave of Melissani, rich in stalactites and stalagmites.
