The island of Antikythira is a small islet situated between Kythira and Kissamos of Crete. Although secluded from the rest of the Ionian islands, it belongs to the complex of the Ionian Islands, but administratively, like Kythira, it comes under the Prefecture of Piraeus, Attica.
On the island there are many small settlements, but the majority of the inhabitants are staying at Potamos, which is the port and the commercial centre of the island.
During the last years, a number of infrastructure works have been made on the island, which now has a modern heliport and a well preserved road network.
Here, you can visit the twin churches of the Presentation of Virgin Mary and Aghios Dionysios, the church of the patron saint and protector of the island of Antikythira, Aghios Myron, one of the very few preserved in Greece, as well as the Observation station of the Hellenic Ornithological Society. Antikythira occupies an important geographical position in the Hellenic territory as regards the emigration of the birds. The station observes the emigrating current of the birds of Africa to Europe and vice versa.
In the depth of Antikythira, was found the famous statue of the Antikythera Ephebe, now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Athens.
