The town of Kythira, Hora, has all the characteristics of a typical island city. Built on the southern part of the island, with the picturesque port of Kapsali, it composes the most impressive images of the island.
The capital of the island of Kythira, with Venetian features, but also characteristics from Mani and the island of Crete, is not one of the most tourist developed areas of the island and it is mainly offered for quiet staying in the renovated Venetian mansions that have been turned into traditional guest houses.
Here, you can visit the Medieval Castle (1503), around which Hora is built, on a rocky elevation. In the yard of the half-deserted castle, as well as in the streets of Hora, you will see remarkable Byzantine churches, such as the church of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) of Myrtidiotissa, Aghios Ioannis Theologos and Pantokrator. In the region of Paleopolis, Skandia, the ancient town of Kythira, were found the baths of Aphrodite, the birth place of the Goddess.

It is the beach with the prettier natural colours, decorated with multicoloured pebbles. It is crowded and you may have some difficulty in parking. However the beach will compensate you.

A double sandy beach (separated by a rock) in the port of Chora, the picturesque Kapsali. Both beaches have sand and pebbles. The first one is rocky while the second has many cafes and restaurants. These beaches are well known and although in summer they are highly frequented you will never feel crowded. They have wonderful blue water and are ideal for children. From there you may also see Avgo island.

At the southwest of the island and on the foot of St Elesa Mountain you may find Melidoni. The clear water, the sand and the general peace and quiet at the beach with relax you and make you forget where you are. Ideal winds: north and west. You may combine swimming in Melidoni with a visit to Panagia Mirtidotisa’s monastery. After following the signs to Drimonas village and after taking with you water (because the canteen on the beach may be closed) follow the signs, pass St. Kosmas' Monastery and then after some kilometres of passable dirt road you will end up in Melidoni.

One of the most famous beaches of the island with pebbles, rocks, steep mountain sides and blue water. It is situated at the south part of the island and to get there you must pass through Kalamos village, after following a dirt road. You shouldn’t count on finding an open canteen, so you should take with you everything you might need. Ideal winds for swimming there: east, north and west.
