Kythira Museums and Historical monuments

Archaeological Museum of Kythira: The building that houses the museum was built in 1911 to house the Kythirian Association. In 1979 was donated by the Kythirian Association to the State to house the museum. The museum includes samples of prehistoric vessels dated from Minoan and Mycenaean period, mainly from Paleopolis, marble sculptures, pottery, inscriptions, coins. The archaic lion of Kythira is the most important. Due to lack of space many of the findings are either stored or displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. Unfortunately, Kythira don’t have a museum that it worth its history (tel: 0030 2736031739).

Byzantine Museum: It is housed in the post-Byzantine church of Analipsi (Ascension) at Kato Livadi and it hosts a collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art. The objects in the collection have been granted by the Holy Cathedral of Kythira. These are murals from the early Christian to the post-Byzantine years, works of religious art and objects of religious ritual. Inside the room you will see, also fragments of an important Early Christian mosaic floor from the ruined church of Aghios Ioannis at Potamos, in connection with the detached frescoes from the semi-cylindrical arch (tel: 0030 2736031731).

Historical Archive of Kythira: It is located in the castle of Hora, the capital of the island, the second major after that of Corfu (Kerkyra), since it includes records dated from the 16th century.

Memorial of expatriated Kythirians: It is located at Fratsia. This is a beautiful stone with a marble slab with two pairs of dolphins showing to different directions and a compass in the shape of Kythira in the centre with the phrase “In memory of Expatriation the birthplace dedicates”.
