Kalamos (550 inhabitants) is a small wooded island, opposite to Mytikas of Etoloakarnania, Western Greece. The main settlements are Kalamos and Episkopi. Its characteristic is the towering pines that go down to the sea and create an exotic landscape.
The tourist activity is small and, mainly, during the months of July and August, with a perspective, however, of future development. In the port of the island boats can dock there.
Here, you can visit the castle (or Kastromonastiro), in the settlement of Episkopi. Some parts of its walls are saved, while very little is known about the history of the impressive building. It is said that inside this castle is buried the mother of Georgios Karaiskakis, fighter of 1821 (Greek War of Independence). You can also cross the pine forest and enjoy a wonderful trail.
On the island of Kalamos, you can swim at the beach of Agrapidia, pebble beach, one of the largest beaches and near the center of the village. In the beach there is a small tavern. You can also swim, in the eastern part of the island, at Asprogiali, a wonderful beach with white sand or at the wonderful beach of Myrtia, with pebbles. Beautiful beaches are also Pefki, Kedros, Kipi and Trahilos. In the south of the cove of Vathy, but also to the northeast, in the promontory of Kefali, diving lovers are offered the chance to live unique experiences in the magnificent waters of the island.
