Gaios is a small, picturesque settlement situated in the southeastern side of the island, constituting its port and its capital. Built on the bank of a small closed gulf, it is surrounded by dense vegetation. In the entrance on the port, you can find the small islands of Panaghia and Aghios Nikolaos. The architectural style of the houses is typical traditional of the Ionian Islands, with several mansion-houses on the inshore road of the area and picturesque neighborhoods within the colorful “kantounia” (narrow streets). Here, you can the island of Panaghia, with the monastery and the small island of Aghios Nikolaos, as well as the Venetian castle (15th century), the historical Archive of the island, near the port, the church of Aghii Apostoli, the museum of Paxos, the caves at Moggonissi, Ortholithos, the standing rock within the sea and the Grava of Ipapanti (Hypapante).
