Paxi Archaeological Sights - Castles

Aghios Nikolas castle: Ruined Venetian castle of the 15th century. It is an impressive and imposing castle, with crenellations and canons, located on the islet of Aghios Nikolas, at the entrance of Gaios port. You can visit it after a permit of the Municipality (tel.: 0030 2662032100). In the island, there was another castle, “Dialetos”, a Venetian castle built at Babaka, near Harami beach and the village of Lakka, but there is no trace of the castle now.

Ancient cemetery: It was recently discovered at the place called Aghios Spyridon, at Magazia region, and it probably is dated since the 6th century B.C. From the offerings (“kterismata”) in the cemetery, archaeologists conclude that Paxos island, during the 6th century B.C. had been evolved to a great commercial and naval centre.
