Zante, capital and port of the island, extends up to the roots of the hill, below the castle; a town full of culture, offering the possibility of beautiful passages at Strata Marina in the beach, the famous Rouga, the trade centre with picturesque arches and the paved central square of Aghios Markos where everyone is gathered.

The most important sight in the town of Zakynthos and the most frequented tourist attraction of the island is Bohali, below the Venetian Castle, with small, quiet, backstreets and old houses, with yards full of jasmines. The Venetian Fortress offers an exquisite panoramic view to the today’s town of Zante and the Ionian Sea. Here, you will also find the Environmental Education Centre of Zante, unique in the Ionian Islands, contributing the sensitization of students and teachers in subjects pertaining to the environment.

Zante has created a special culture, where all art forms were developed. The music constitutes one of the basic elements of Zante culture, having as principal feature Zante serenade. Moreover, it has been the “mother” of the first music school in Greece (1815) and home of important musicians with international fame.
