Maherado

Maherado (796 inhabitants) is a traditional settlement, in central Zante (Zakynthos), with picturesque cafes, ideal for walks near nature and with considerable tourist development.

In the municipality of Artemission important elements of Zante heritage are saved, as well as of the traditional folklore architecture. Here, you can visit the church of Aghia Mavra, within the cypresses, with the icon of Aghia Mavra (3rd century A.D.) that came from Egypt, priceless treasures and the Venetian tower of its bell tower (it is said that the sound of the bells is the most melodic in entire Greece!). The temple was destroyed by fire on December 8th, 2005. Moreover, you can visit the village of Aghios Nikolaos or Kiliomenos, village at an altitude of 480 meters, with the impressive bell tower of Aghios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) (1893) and the traditional houses dated since 16th century. Here, you will also find the rare “garden of orchids”, as called by the botanists, between the villages of Kiliomenos and Lagopodo, because grow here 42 species of orchids.

The western coasts of the municipality include secluded shores and gulfs surrounded by pine forests, ideal for swimming, although they are not easily accessible.

An unforgettable sunset, memorable plunges, an incomparable bay, unique wild scenery created by “loubes”, the holes in the vertical cliffs when salt is accumulated. It is at the southwest of the island.
